Running news:
5.3 miles. It was 81 degrees at 7:20am!

Have you bought your copy of Titanic yet?

I can't believe the hype that's going into the selling of this video. Stores opening at midnight so you can buy or rent a copy. So...you're going to run home and watch it and go to bed at 4?

It's 2 tapes, and it's going to look like hell on the small screen. And everybody's already seen it.

Of course, I'll bet there was a line last night at midnight too.

I visited a new doctor (for one of those wonderful yearly exams) yesterday. He asked me some medical history questions, such as how many caffeinated drinks I drank (about 1 per day), did I smoke (no), and how much alcohol did I drink.

"About one a month," I said. Then I thought: Of course, this past weekend I stored up enough for 3 or 4 months!

So, it was pretty darn hot this morning when I went running. At 7am I could feel how thick the air was. The only thing that saved me (and got me to do the full 5.3 miles) is the cloud cover that hid the sun during my run. Even with it, I found the run hard to do.

This heat has trapped some of that famous LA smog in the Valley. Off in the distance I can see a thick brown haze covering the north half of the Valley. Since I've been down in LA the smog hasn't been too bad, except on days like this, when it's simply horrible.

Yesterday, as Darin and I drove home from lunch, we passed a massive backup going the other way on the freeway. A brush fire had broken out on the other side's embankment and there were quite a few fire trucks lining the side of the road. To make it worse, of course, a couple of rubberneckers (I'm assuming) had gotten into a massive accident right near the brush fire, so emergency vehicles were trying to make their way through the traffic to the accident.

Here's how Darin and I handle these things: The driver drives; the passenger checks out the scene and narrates what's going on.

Every other car on our side of the freeway was swerving a bit, because the driver was looking left instead of straight ahead.
