Today is the One Year Anniversary of The Paperwork. Amazing. I started this as a way to keep in touch with my friends in Cupertino while I was at grad school in Los Angeles. I kept at it because I found I liked the discipline (which has been lacking recently, but that's a subject for another entry). I liked expounding on subjects at random. I like getting feedback from friends and strangers on writing that I've created.
Darin's family has taken to reading this journal frequently and commenting on it to me. My family never reads it.
In the past year I've definitely developed my writing style. I'm very comfortable with this loose, conversational forum, chatting about my day or what I'm reading or whatever's on my mind. And best of all for ego, I've gotten compliments on my writing, and not just from people who want to be nice.
Last year at this time, I was looking forward to graduate school. I had no idea what to expect. My first entry was actually going to be June 1, commemorating a most excellent vacation Darin and I had taken to Big Sur, where we stayed at the Post Ranch Inn for a couple of nights. I had my PowerBook with me there and I played a lot of Escape Velocity.
This year: we've relocated to Los Angeles, one year of graduate school is down. I'm more excited, and more frightened, than I've been in my entire life. I don't have the exact same impetus to write as I first did, because Darin is here with me, and I realized after he moved down that he was a major incentive for me to write. I think I've gained weight and I haven't jogged in this entire year. I've written an entire screenplay, lots of e-mails, and probably 200 or so pages in here. I worked at Babylon 5, met Mel Gibson, and made a bunch of new friends. I also feel like I'm no closer to a career in TV, but that's a topic for another entry.
Happy Anniversary to me, Happy Anniversary to me...
