i can quit anytime i want
who is this guy insisting i spend time with him?

The quote of the day:
How do I get out of here?

-- Bathory, running for her life in the swamps (which don't follow the same way-in-equals-way-out rule of the rest of Clan Lord.

Running news:
5 miles yesterday.
3.5 miles Tuesday.
None today.

I can quit Clan Lord any time I want. I just don't want to. It's a great way to see all of my friends (Acht, Wisher, Aadan, Thrund, Kitsune, Rifkin, Miranth, plus others whose names I can't remember) and satisfy my urge to kill things at the same time.

This morning I slept in and got woken up with the cry, "Aadan's down in the rat tunnel! We have to save him!" I logged in, went to the tunnel, knocked off a few skeletons, had a beer. Okay, everything but that last one.

We got a huge pack of people together and went to the South Beach, where due to some treachery on the part of other players (yes, even in a cooperative game there's treachery) our whole group got massacred by rockodiles. Then we headed to the east field, where we did several search-and-rescues. Then we fought hooded corpses in the farmer's hut. At that point I stopped playing in order to get showered and dressed, and then Aadan--I mean, Brent--called and Acht and I went to have lunch with him.

I've discovered a few things about my playing style:

  • Large groups? I don't like 'em. I don't want to hunt in a pack of more than 5, one of whom must be a healer.

  • If I am in a large group, I immediately metamorphose into a tour guide.
    1. Everybody stay together,
    2. look for your buddy,
    3. yell if you need help, and
    4. RUN ON RED!

  • Most people don't seem to get the whole "run on red!" thing down. When you're in the red, you're about to die. Most people die, expecting to be raised immediately. If they're not, they shout about it a lot. Hint: it's easier to heal you if you're still alive and in the red than if you're dead.

(Mitch, who's played this game for much longer than we have, says that because there are so many healers in the game now, players aren't taking dying as seriously any more--gee, there'll be a healer along any second; I should just keep fighting. However, if there's a party going somewhere and they have to wait while a healer raises a dead guy over and over and over again, that dead guy is really going to annoy the rest of the party. Today I saw a guy go through the "Get up, start fighting, die, and get raised again" cycle about 4 times.)

  • Healers should heal. When healers decide they'd rather fight (when there are people around to be healed), I get very annoyed. This weakens the healer (who's needed for healing), and...healers are terrible fighters. You have to have 100s of ranks before you're a decent fighter.

I'm also a much stronger fighter than I was, although I'm not slaughtering critters yet. (When you slaughter something, you're so strong that you get no credit for killing it. You can only fight major beasties.) I can kill young rocks and orgas single-handedly, provided it's one-on-one and nobody gangs up on me.

 * * *

But as I said to Darin today, Clan Lord does seem to be interfering with my getting something done. So I think I have to pick the hours I'm going to play.

So, I met with a couple of fellow USCers last night in a writing group: me, Linda, Aaron, and Jody. (Christian didn't show up.) We discussed Aaron's stuff and Linda's story ideas. And I was very encouraged by how much everyone particpated and had really good input on the stories. We haven't gotten to the writing yet.

This will be a good spur for me.
