digging in
how does this keep happening?

I went away for a weekend and I have 200+ messages to wade through, many of them directed specifically at me. (As opposed to mailing list mail.)

I'm behind. I have things to do. I want to hide.

Observations, in no particular order:

  • How 'bout that Newt, huh? And isn't it strange that Drudge didn't have that one first?

  • An article on NPR about how "math is cool" -- a perfume named "Pi", the hero of Good Will Hunting, people becoming more aware of how math affects their lives (from computers to Wall Street to social behaviors). I'm not convinced, but they did end the segment with Tom Lehrer doing "New Math."

  • The cost of a first-class letter is going up?

  • Food does not automatically reappear in the refrigerator, no matter how long you avoid going to the food store.

  • I've completely trashed my nails. I don't know know why. But I'm really upset about it. I guess I thought I was over the nail thing and I'm not.

  • I made it to the Second Circle in Clan Lord! Whoo hoo! That's Mistress Bathory to you.

  • The supermarket is ridiculously crowded these days. Are they giving stuff away?

  • Why do people order alcoholic beverages on one-hour flights?

I spent many hours in bed this morning reading The Queen's Man by Sharon Kay Penman. I'm not sure why I'm loving it so much, but I really am -- she does a good job of evoking what medieval England was like. The mystery takes place among the intrigues of the court in London whilst Richard the Lion-Hearted is out doing the Crusades thing; what is John up to?

According to the reader reports on Amazon, her other books are even better, so I'll probably be checking them out.
