bay area: welcome to the web page
everything's funnier with rice wine.
The quote of the day:
They were the two guys from the Home Shopping Network, selling Bowie knives.
-- Scott, describing Steve Jobs and Avi Tevanian talking at the WWDC.

Today I had lunch with Lori Kaplan, a friend from Apple Computer I haven't seen in years. Last time I saw her, she had a new baby girl; she recently took Rebecca to Take Your Daughters To Work Day. She works at Intuit now and really enjoys it.

We had lunch at La Fiesta in Mountain View, which is great Mexican food--way better than anything I've found so far in Los Angeles, believe it or not--and I talked about writing and she talked about where everyone we knew at Apple is now. Scattered to the four winds, pretty much. Amazing the speed of dispersal around the industry, I guess.

I was informed early on in the evening that it was Scott's friend John Burkey's great ambition to say something profound in order to get mentioned on my page. I attempted to tell them that pretty much "expressed desire to be mentioned" is enough. John used to work with Scott in Chicago until Apple hired him away.

Darin, Mitch, Scott, John, and I went to Kikusushi for dinner. Darin and I agreed that Kiku is even better than our beloved Iwata in Los Angeles, and it's cheaper, too. (This entire week has been about how much better the Bay Area is than Los Angeles in all ways.) I drank most of a large sake, which led to my laughing hysterically at everything and trying to write down funny things that got said as fast and as legibly as I could on my Palm. Which was no mean feat.

During dinner, Scott started to tell a story, and rather rapidly probably wished he hadn't:

            SCOTT
The other day, I was in Jewel--

            DIANE
          (brow furrows)
        What's that?

            SCOTT
        It's a supermarket.

            DARIN
        Actually, he's bragging about his
        sex life.

DIANE snorts, blowing SAKE all over her face.

            DIANE
        Hey!

            MITCH
          (to Scott)
        Welcome to the web page.

Today's gratuitous mercantile link: Scott Adler's a capella group, Lake Shore Jive, has a new CD named Hollywood to Monroe out. Scott doesn't have any solos on this, but he did all the mixing and production. He'll have a solo on the next one.
