the oscars
and as you all know (and do), when darin talks...
The quote of the day:
This is the highlight of my day. I hope it's not all downhill from here.
-- Kevin Spacey, in his acceptance speech.

Darin insisted I put up a new entry. He likes my e-mail entries and my Forum; he just doesn't think they should be a substitute for the real thing.

This is for Darin.

Impressions from last night's Oscars ceremony (this appeared in my Forum):

  • Hollywood marketing at work -- we know why Cameron, Drew, and Lucy are presenting an award together, and the movie hasn't been finished, let alone seen by anybody.
  • Did Peter Coyote lose a bet? Or is his career in this much trouble?
  • Well, the Wall Street Journal just spoiled all the fun, now didn't they?
  • Angelina, cool it about your brother, okay? It's weirding everyone out.
  • So that's how they solved the whole "Blame Canada" problem. Nice t-shirt, Robin.
  • By the by, Rockettes kick Debbie Allen ass.
  • Is the Matrix winning the most awards or what? Sweep, dude, sweep!
  • For God's sake, man, turn off the smoke machine! Isaac Hayes can't breathe in there!
  • Does Warren Beatty, consummate Hollywood pro, always sound like that, or is that demeanor an act? Damn actors, can't tell what's real.
  • Yo, John Irving: way to go with the political speech, bro.
  • I'm glad Hilary Swank won but...is there nothing we can do about those teeth? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
  • Okay, Kevin Spacey probably had the best acceptance speech -- "This is the highlight of my day." But he still didn't deserve it. I worship the ground Kevin swishes over, but Russell Crowe wuz robbed.
  • I wonder what Stee and Patrick have to say about the Oscars this year? (Actually, I thought Patrick's picks for the Oscars were way better than the Academy's.)

Yesterday we went to visit with Brent, Therese, and Elinor. We had dinner with them at the Salt Creek Grille and then watched the Oscars.

Elinor was not thrilled at first with how much attention the baby was getting -- attention Ellie is used to receiving -- but pretty soon she was enjoying Sophia. At dinner she drew a picture of Darin, Sophia, and me (me holding the baby) and for the short ride back to their apartment she asked which car was the baby going to be in?

Sophia was not at all herself last night. Well, I guess she's never herself -- she's changing so fast that once we get used to a "phase" (about two days in length) she's on to something new.

Last night I had to nurse her constantly -- before we went to dinner, twice at the restaurant, and then twice again during the Oscars. Those last two sessions must have lasted an hour each. It wasn't the frantic, I-need-comfort sucking she gets into during a fussy period; she was simply really, really hungry.

I guess this signals a growth spurt. Or, as Brent kept saying, "She wants to get to ten pounds tonight."

Today she wanted to nurse for two hours this morning, at which point I cut her off -- it was fussy nursing, or "suck, squirm, suck, cry, suck, scream..." I cut off fussy nursing, figuring that there are better ways to calm her down that don't involve severe wear and tear on my body (since the nursing isn't calming her down anyhow).

Darin and I went for our lunchtime walk, a new habit we've gotten into, and Sophia cried the whole time. I said, "She's probably hungry." We got to the Great Greek and voila! Between last night's visit to a restaurant and today's, I have turned into Berkeley Earth Mother. Without hesitation I nursed her right there (admittedly, with one button my shirt still closed for propriety and I chose the table in the corner). I had to cut her off after about a half hour (so we could leave) and she cried on the way home...but we think that might have been because of the state of her diaper. Which was dire, we discovered.

This hungry, hungry hippo phase she's going through is kind of a bummer: she's no longer sleeping for 5 hours at a time, the way she did last Thursday and Friday. Instead of waking up twice last night she woke up three times, hungry each time. Ow.
