Bruce’s post (reproduced below) is correct. I grew up with Joe Mooney (of the Mooney’s Dairy family) in Saginaw, MI. He confirmed this with me in a conversation we had about 30 years ago! The “Moon” in Blue Moon is a reference to his dad, who devised the flavor. I’m not sure about the other posters here claiming lots of other sources of Blue Moon ice cream — but can only guess that they were knock-offs or possibly licensed through Mooney’s…
The original Blue Moon Ice Cream was made by Mooney’s Dairy in Saginaw Mi. Stroh’s bought out Mooney’s some time ago but they still make Blue Moon with the same recipe as did the Mooneys. There are many other flavors that are the Mooney’s recipes and there are some new ones too. Stroh’s ice cream is totally different and not as creamy and good as Mooney’s. The original Blue Moon does contain pineapple tidbits and the flaver is considered to be pineapple. The blue color was added to make it not so pale and to be different from vanilla. You can still buy it at Mooney’s Ice Cream Store on State St. in Saginaw. We just came from there and yes they had Blue Moon in the 3 gallon tubs just like they always have had it.

Although I don’t know if it’s been mentioned or not before, I’ve found several places in Illinois over the years serving the elusive Superman ice cream that I so covet. For starters, I believe the best of the bunch is at a Breyer’s stand, most notably the one in Gurnee Mills, Gurnee. Sadly, I think take home was a little pricey, but more than worth it. I’m in Bloomington, IL right now, and I know the Kroger stores have a gallon for $4 (of which I am sucking on right now) that is good, albeit not as good at some others. In Carol Stream, there used to be a TCBY that had just the most wonderful Rainbow/Superman ice cream, but it’s not there any longer. If you can find a TCBY near you, it’s great.
However, concerning the flavors, everyone has a different theory of what it is. I don’t taste anything really fruity about it, or much of a variation between colors, personally. I always thought it might have a slight hint of bubblegum, but I think it tastes far better. Still, not really sure. Hershey’s says it’s banana, strawberry, and blueberry, but I hate all those flavors, myself. O_o Oh well.
I’d like to try some of that Blue Moon, though. I’ve never heard of it before!

BLUE MOON – is also made in Scottsdale, Az. by a small shop that was featured in SUNSET magazine. They ship upon request. The store is called AUNTIE EM’S. The owner says it’s a very popular flavor with roots originating in the midwest. Now mostly a “blue moon” flavoring; however, originally — spoke with the lead chemmist at the flavoring company that supplies Hershey’s and other proprietary frozen confection businesses — it was a mish-mash of flavors. Old ice creams melted down, combined, and then refrozen. Yes, some pineapple used to be involved, rarely now however, along with a little pistachio (probably where you get your nutmeg tones), and some marshmallow. I believe Food Coloring was added to turn it a more desireable colour. Now it’s simply a blue ice cream that isn’t made, but flavored. Afterwards some people put various bits in there, one being pineapple. Some people use it as their base flavor for SUPERMAN ice cream as well.
Oh yea, I’m the owner of Auntie Em’s! Have a background in chemsitry and went to grad school for bio-physics. I looove ice cream. nice little posts. have a great day.

Blue Moon, Superman, and Bubble Gum ice creams were all favorites growing up with a summerhome in Sister’s Lake, Michigan. We had the Cone Dock on Round Lake that carried Sherman Dairy Icecream with all those flavors. If we were up for a 30 minute drive we would head up to South Haven, Michigan to the original Sherman Dairy or the Tin Roof (I think it was called) in the middle of nowhere, Michigan. We now currently have a summerhome in South Haven. It is great to be able to find Sherman Dairy at any of the local Icecream Shops, Beach Concession Stands, Local Grocery Stores, and especially the original Sherman Dairy on Pheonix Rd. There was an icecream shop in Chicago on Diversery and East of Clark St. that carried Sherman Dairy Ice Cream, but it closed. Where can I find it in Chicago?
Does anyone know what title I would look up to find “Ice Cream Truck” Service? I live in Sarasota Fl. and only saw one truck in 2 years come through. Hello everyone, I have a question, What is in Sleeping Bear Dunes Bear Hug, made by Hudsonville Ice Cream. I sell Ice cream at a tractor show every year in West Michigan, I need another chocolate flavor. I’ve tried Chocolate Monster but didn’t think it was that great of a seller. I am getting French silk, but what other flavor should I add that has chocolate ice cream. Any suggestions? thanks

I have a 3 year old son and wish he could experience the “ice-cream truck” experience like I did when I was a kid. I just don’t know where to begin to find a service to call to ask to come through our Neighborhood!
Thanks, Ashley

Blue Moon tastes like:
Marshmallow, but not
Orange, but not
Mint, but not
It’s indescribable. Cedar Crest makes it, but refuses to ship it. Bastards!
I just had a sugar cone of it today @ the Milwaukee County Zoo. It’s hard to find in the grocery store during the winter. But in the summer it’s a tradition.
Someone was asking about Cinnamon Ice Cream, Cedar Crest makes that as well.
