Darin is out at the WorldCon science-fiction convention again. Because he's gone every day, I feel as though I've hardly seen him, although when I stop to think about it (always a dangerous proposition) we've been together a lot. So I don't know what my problem is.
What I'm doing right now is wondering if I should go out someplace and read my book (Making Movies, by Sidney Lumet -- a good book, if you're interested in filmmaking) or stay here and read my book whilst doing laundry. I guess I know which one I should do. (Sigh. I'll be right back.)
Okay. Back. Let me recap this weekend quickly:
Friday: Met up with Darin and Nevin at the apartment after the guest speaker at USC and they got back from the convention. Fernando came over at 7 or so and the four of us went to dinner at Teru Sushi in Studio City, which was great but waaaaay too expensive. (Eeeek.) I finally saw my first celebrity of this stay down in LA: the guy who played Eddie Charles on Dream On.
After dinner, Fernando decided to go home, and Nevin, Darin, and I headed to exotic downtown Burbank, where we caught the 10pm showing of A Very Brady Sequel, which, yes, was very silly, thanks for asking.
Saturday: Darin took off early to get to the Convention. I think I lazed around for a while until going back to exotic downtown Burbank and do some shopping: first for a toaster oven (I miss my turkey and cheese melts) and then for groceries. I came home, put everything away, and promptly began napping. (I can't wait until my sofa shows up, so that I can have a place to sit and read that doesn't have sheets and pillows and is more comfy when you lie down than when you are sitting up.)
Edgar called -- we had discussed possibly seeing a movie Saturday night. I went over to see his new apartment near Westwood and we drove to Century City Plaza to see She's The One. Ticket-buying tip at the Century City AMC Theatres: just say you're a student. You get the student prices and you don't have to show proof! (Both of us had student IDs, but neither of us had to show them.)
The movie was good. Darin told me later that he's heard nothing but bad reviews of it, but both Edgar and I found it to be a witty, warm, small-scale comedy for adults. Some performances were uneven and Jennifer Aniston disappears halfway through, but overall it was one of the best experiences I've spent at the theatre this summer. Hell of a lot better than the over-the-top recycled action crap. (I really like action movies, but they've been so boring this summer -- there's nothing at stake. Who cares?)
I came home about 11pm, and Darin was already home! He was exhausted though, so the second I walked in the door, he said, "Good night," and headed to bed. I tried going to sleep right then too, but I couldn't, so I got up and web-cruised for a while.
Sunday: This morning we had breakfast at Du-Par's, un vrai coffee shop just a little ways away with Nevin, Fernando, and Nancy. Really good pancakes and French toast, and the waitresses really are as grumpy as advertised. I know where Darin and I are having breakfast whenever he gets into town.
Then Darin and I went to do some comparison shopping for a VCR. Yes, I've survived two weeks in LA without a VCR. Survival necessary no longer -- we got me a VCR that has frame-advance (my requirement), and auto clock set, 30-second commercial skip, and stereo (his requirements).
Now he and Nevin have gone off to the Convention again, and they're not going to be back until 1am or so. I guess I'll entertain myself. There must be something to do in this here town. Other than laundry, I mean.
