Plane Speaking

What do these dreams mean, anyhow?

Last night I had the latest in what's turned out to be a long series of dreams involving characters from Babylon 5. My husband, the Babylon 5 fanatic, does not have these dreams. CJ, another fanatic, does not have these dreams. The two of them can discuss the tiniest little details of the show ad nauseum--perhaps this is how they get it out of their system. Me, I dream about them.

My theory about this has to do with the fact that actors and characters from TV shows and movies constantly show up in my dreams. Not as lust objects. No, simply as characters. I had one incredibly vivid dream years ago in which I was at a party at a beach house...that happened to be owned by Chris Sarandon. He didn't play any particularly large role in the dream; he was just there.

I remember this dream so clearly, so precisely because an actor whom I had seen in a couple of movies but hadn't really noticed had a minor role.

Central Casting works my dreams.

Darin and I discussed why I might be having these dreams and what they mean. What does it mean that my dreams are an outlet for a syndicated SF series?

"At least they're not sexual," I said. "Although, you never know. Flying dreams are supposed to be about sex."

"They are?" he said. When I nodded, he said, "How about that you're asleep and it's hard for your mind to simulate the sensation of touching the floor?"

That seemed a sensible explanation, but who can understand the vagaries of the sleeping mind? I said, "There's also the newage explanation." I waited. "Can you guess?"

"That a flying dream is really the astral body leaving your body?"

One of the great things about our relationship is that we no longer need to have verbal communication.

He started telling me about how he knew about all this crap because he played D&D for years, and things like astral projection were all a part of the game. He told me about the various material, ethereal, and astral planes.

I was feeling a bit feisty. "So, how do you know..."

"That all this stuff isn't in D&D because it's true? Diane, stop it."

Hee hee hee.

This episode of The American Experience, "Freedom on my Mind," about the Voter Registration Drives in Mississippi, is amazing. I especially love the segregationists equating giving the blacks civil rights with giving them "special rights." I can dream that one of those damn righteous religious bigots who talks about giving homosexuals "special rights" might recognize themselves...but there isn't a chance.

"They don't want something like what you got...they want what you got...they want your women!" This is an actual quote from a segregationist on this show. Sound familiar?

Assholes.
