Last night I dragged six friends out to De Anza's Film and Video Festival, a showcase of some of the best work produced by De Anza film students over the past year. (No, nothing by yours truly.) The films shown were for the most part extremely entertaining. There are some incredibly talented people at De Anza. I exaggerate not when I say, if you want to get into film production, there's no better place to learn the basics than our own local community college.
I digress (what a surprise). There were works that were technically great but lacked a really good story, and those that were merely competent in shot setup and editing, but the story more than made up for it. (I can't think of one that combined both, actually, but there were a couple that didn't have either.) In case you're wondering, my favorite was the one that had a great story but just okay tech credits. (I blame my subscription to Daily Variety for this terminology.)
Afterwards we all went to dinner at the Outback, a steak restaurant, which was perhaps not the best choice for CJ and Lance, who are vegetarians. But steak restaurants, even in California, have fish and veggie entrees, so they were okay. (CJ even took home the leftover bit of her salmon for Kitsune, the Somali cat. Look on CJ's page for more information about this extremely cute cat.)
During dinner afterwards, a couple of people pointed out several incredibly glaring logical errors in The Rock, a movie I enjoyed a whole bunch. And these errors were pretty grotesque. But that still doesn't bother me about the movie. (Rhetorical question alert.) Why? I realize I have to analyse this more, because I love action movies, but their plot errors usually toss me right out, but they didn't in this one.
