I've certainly had the concept of PGP and encryption explained to me a million times. Darin, in a fit of trying to help my widdle bwain understand it, pulled out The Codebreakers by David Kahn. (1181 pages! Has anyone ever read the entire book? Really?)
I even used the PGP concept in my script.
But I've never really understood it.
To be honest, I still don't understand it, but I'm getting into it. Mitch told me about this great new professional version of PGP software, PGP 5.0 from PGP Software, and I, not wanting to be left out, ran out and bought it. Well, I kind of sat around and ordered it over the web, but whatever.
This is fun.
I made my keypair, which has already been signed by Mitch. You can have it and send me encrypted mail:

So far I've only sent mail to and gotten mail from Mitch. We've signed and verified one another's keys; isn't that nice? Almost Canadian of us. PGP 5.0 makes encryption and decryption so easy, except for the part about remembering the passphrase. (Oops.)
Send me mail! Send me keys! Defeat the government...or at least teach them that there's got to be a better way to deal with secret communication than stupid Clipper-chip type proposals.
David Filippi writes in and points out the contradiction inherent in how on July 5th I ranted and railed about "people taking the moral high ground," and then I proceeded to exactly that myself. I defended myself by saying that I at least consider other people's opinions before decrying them as inane. It's not much of a defense, but it's all mine.
I wonder if keeping The Paperwork has made me more opinionated or just more strident about the opinions I'm willing to say that I hold. I have often thought of myself of being a wishy-washy person. I am usually of two minds on any topic, even more if a second person joins the conversation. Whenever I can clearly state something or even say with conviction, "I agree with that!" I'm so excited.
I'd like to be more like Darin. He will say with absolute certainty, "The sky is blue!" When someone points out that it's overcast, he has no problem with changing his mind. He was famous for this during System 7.0: "Yes!" "No!" "Yes!" He's not one of these people who will cling to his opinion, come hell or high water, no matter how wrong he knows it is.
Today I went to Babylonian to help Karen sort out some Fan Club computer business. The FC went through another upheaval recently and right now it's decentralized: Karen takes care of some of it, Jeffrey takes care of other aspects, someone else does something else. Kind of a nightmare, I think, but it's not my problem.
Hardly anyone but Karen was there. They're all off in England at some convention. An all-expenses paid vacation to England. Makes me wanna cry. Or develop a science-fiction show that has a big following.
I didn't go jogging today. I keep meaning to go every other day, but it's turning out to be every 2 days.
Rob Petrie has been inspired by my recent feats of jogging and has started getting out there himself! All right, Rob! Do you take Nutmeg with?
I wouldn't like to jog with Nutmeg; she would move faster than I would, then would turn around and yip at me. "Yip! Faster! Like me! Yip!"
Maria Winnett contributes this to my search for cool quotes:
If you've got talent and persistence, you'll be a king; if you've got no talent, but you've got persistence, you'll be a prince; but if you have talent and no persistence, you'll be a pauper.
Her writing teacher attributed it to Jeffrey Archer, which frankly Maria and I have a hard time believing. Any ideas?
