How bad is the "stuff" situation? Tonight we unpacked a box that I packed on my last day at Apple Computer. Which, for your information, was October 1, 1993.
Heh.
The house situation is better now. It's still not good, but at least we can walk from one end of the bedroom to the other without tripping over anything other than our dirty clothes and our shoes. I had to go to class today first thing in the morning, which meant we woke up at 7 (the bedroom faces east anyhow, so the bright sunlight streams in at dawn and we're close to being up). I went to class and then Jeffrey said he didn't need me at Babylonian (am I ever going in there again?), so I came home to have lunch with Darin.
I mentioned I was a bit sleepy, as I nodded off twice during lecture this morning, and Darin said, "Well, we can go to lunch and then you can take a nap, or you can take a nap and then we'll have lunch." Like a love-blind fool, he let me choose. I took the nap.
Three hours later, I woke up. And guess who was napping beside me? (Darin, in case you're not sure.) He said, "Four o'clock!" and leapt out of bed. I really wish some chemicals conglomerate would bottle whatever he's got in his bloodstream that allows him to leap out of bed. And find an antidote to it.
We immediately started doing errands, like buying a washer and dryer -- hurray! clean clothes! -- and unpacking boxes, unpacking boxes, crushing boxes, filling up boxes for Goodwill, and unpacking some more boxes. I never want to see another box again; almost every single book we own is still upstairs in some box or another, which may tell you how many boxes we still have to go through. (A lot.)
Our tempers did better today, because we had a long talk last night. It'll get much easier when we can use our kitchen and not have to bypass it as an eyesore with obstacles. And even better when the half of our garage that's storing Goodwill fodder and trash gets emptied out.
The toughest part for me right now is getting to the Internet, because every room has a phone plug except the one where my desk is, and every place there is a phone plug is so covered in _________ that it's not a comfortable surfing-type area for me. Soon I'll get in the habit again. On the positive side, all of my favorite journals have lots and lots of entries for me to read.
By the way, Nigel of Countdown to the Big 4-0 has a very funny delineation of the types of journals that are out there today. No, I don't have an exact link to the entry.
Another journaler, a while back, sent me a similar categorization of the journalers out there that did not include gratuitous Babylon 5 barbs:
- The Tammis with hearts over the i.
The Tammis typeset their journal titles in script fonts or cover their
pages with flower tiles. They name their journals things like "Memories
and thoughts" and "My journey". They are often Christian. Sometimes
they're Mormon instead. They can't write a simple declarative sentence
to save their lives.
- The Charleses.
They're nerds. Their pages are surpassing ugly. They write about their
days with clumsy but coherent prose. Tragically, their days are usually
boring.
- The Justins, hearty college freshmen.
They want to get dates. Sometimes they say so in a pleasing way. More
often their youth makes me want to strangle them. Their self-obsession
is epic. They drink too much.
- The depressives.
They want to kill themselves. They're tossing a wide variety of pills
down their throats, sometimes prescription anti-depressants and
sometimes illegal substances. They write sentences that make no sense.
The only clear message you get is that their worlds are shattered and
they want to die. Have a nice day!
- The ones I read.
I thought this was so funny I considered rearranging my "personal" list of journals in this manner...right after I update my "public" list of journals, write a few new Paperworks, move into my house, unpack everything, stop fighting with Darin, and finish the damn semester. Which should be about the time I'm a grandmother.
PS: has geocities lost its mind or something? I tried to follow Ceej's link to the results of the journal poll, but geocities couldn't find it. Then I followed some links to other geocities journals and all of them were "File not found." If you have the results to the journals list, please send them to me. Do not be surprised if many days pass before I thank you, though.
