The quote of the day:
If you ever bought a dog, what did you buy? You bought a bleeping puppy ... You don't buy a 13-year-old German shepherd. You buy a nice young puppy - what are you, crazy? -- 53-year-old James Woods, on why he likes to date young women. For a guy reputed to be so smart, you'd think he'd know better than to open his goddamn mouth sometimes. Two years ago: I get sick at the absolute wrong time. Three years ago: I have a busy day and actually do stuff Today's news question: Hey, anything going on in Miami today? (Don't send me your answers. This is just a little way to expand your horizons. Honest.) |

I'm with Rob Rummel-Hudson: if it had been Sophia in that house, I would have wanted her out of there post-haste. In fact, it might not have been the government going in with guns, it might have been me. (Someone on the Well said: did the Miami relatives really want to get into a hostage standoff with Janet Reno?)
You know, designing a web page sucks. I do not envy all you web designers who do this for a living. I am appalled at how different my page looks in the latest versions of Explorer and Navigator. At least I finally understand why there were so many damn journals who insisted on using teeny tiny text -- it wasn't teeny tiny for them, but it sure was on the Mac versions of the browsers. The column on the left-hand side of this page was in 9-point type when I designed the page -- IE 5.0 has since reset it to 12-point. Frames? No frames? Javascript? Do I design for the least common denominator, or the greatest? Do I go through the hell of creating separate sites -- one for the spiffy top-of-the-line browser user, and one for the Lynx user? Or do I just say, What the hell, it's my site, you view as best you can? Should I use Perl to create my web pages on the fly? Just what the fuck are cascading style sheets anyhow? I rely a lot on Fernando to help me design. I draw a blank -- I don't know if I have no natural design talent or whether I don't trust whether I have talent or not. He's asked me to come up with a list of pages that have designs I like, so we can work from those. Minimalist? Maximalist? Very active? Old school? It's so hard. Anyone know of any shortcuts? Forum: Pity the poor personal web page maker
Don't even get me started on whether I should start doing a weblog or not. I like the "update whenever you feel like it" aspect of a weblog. Something else occurs to you? Just add it. I don't like the "Must come up with interesting links that I didn't get off of someone else's weblog" feature. (I will tell you that I'm thinking of ripping off Rob Rum-Hud's "cool graphic header that tells you what this section of the entry is about" feature. I don't know how he creates that many headers though -- damn power Photoshop users!) |
