So, I know I’m totally going to give you the idea that all my kids do is watch TV, and this is completely one hundred percent not true.
However, the TV they do watch gives me something to write about, so here it is.
Forget Lazytown (as though I could forget it—it’s my single most popular entry ever)—Sophia got bored with Lazytown because it’s been the same five episodes in rotation for the past two months. The show to watch is The Backyardigans. How much do I love this show? I am tempted to watch it when the kids aren’t around. I sing the songs as I do the dishes. There are only nine episodes so far and I have all nine on our TiVo. I force people just visiting our house to watch some of this show.
I love this show.
Tyrone, Tasha, Pablo, Uniqua, and Austin
The Backyardigans is a show about five friends—Tyrone the moose, Tasha the hippo, Pablo the penguin, Uniqua the ladybug, and Austin the kangaroo (actually, I’m not sure what Austin is, and he’s the Backyardigan we see the least of anyhow)—who get together every day and have some theme to their play: ghosts, Tarzan, knights and quests, Mounties, Vikings. They all take roles in their adventure that pretty well fit with their personalities. At the end, they repair to one kid’s house for snacktime.
In between, there’s singing, dancing, and general silliness. What’s extremely excellent about this show is that there’s stuff in there for grownups that’s not sneaky or salacious: it’s just on a level most kids aren’t going to find funny in the same way. For example, three Backyardigans are chasing the Yeti across the North Pole:
TASHA We need kayaks to cross this water. They suddenly spy three KAYAKS on the bank of the river. TYRONE Well, that certainly is convenient.
That line cracks me up everytime.
The songs in this show are incredibly memorable. While doing the dishes I like to sing the songs the Vikings sing as their Viking ship rounds a very powerful whirlpool, “You’ve Got To Hold On Tight”:
You've got to hold on tight Hold on tight You've got to hold on tight Hold on tight You've got to hold on tight with all your Viking might.
Darin’s favorite bit is when they sing a limbo while trying to avoid the laser beams during a super-secret spy mission.
This show has reignited my love of musicals, which has been dormant for some time. (My insistence on musical-only writing music has been helped by the fact that I dug out our CD collection and ripped about 150 of them recently. Of course, I can’t find the one I’m looking for, Linie 1. Sigh.) I want to write a children’s musical, I’m so inspired by this show.
Anyhow: The Backyardigans is on Nick Jr. I highly recommend checking it out.
(Tyrone the moose is my favorite, by the way. In case you’re wondering.)

Update 2/16/05: Wow, lots of comments here! This entry is listed pretty high on Google when you search for “The Backyardigans” so I’m going to assume someone from Nick Jr. has found it. (Hi there! More Backyardigans episodes, please!)
A number of people have posted asking about Backyardigans-themed birthday supplies and other merchandise. As far as I’ve been able to find on the Web, there isn’t any! It might not be licensed yet or might not have gotten to stories yet. All I can say is: Hurry it up! You’ve got lots of customers waiting. If anyone does know of legit Backyardigans stuff, let me know and I’ll put it on this page.
I found a number of Backyardigans songs on LimeWire. I don’t know where they’re from, since a few things tell me they’re not recorded right off of the show. If the production company wanted to put out a CD with each and every song from the show on it, they’d have a bestseller. I think there are plenty of parents out there who wouldn’t mind putting that music on for their kids, and I’d rather pay royalties to the songmakers!
Evidently a new bunch of episodes will start airing in a week or two. I can’t wait…and I think the kids are excited too. All I can say is, keep ’em coming! More! More!
Update 8/11/05: The Backyardigans’ eponymously named CD is now out! The Backyardigans has 19 great songs on it, although it doesn’t include my personal favorite, “You’ve got to hold on tight.” I had downloaded some of these songs from Limewire, but I’m much, much happier having the actual CD in my hot little hand now.
Update 1/28/06: Wow. This entry has 747 comments!
There are a couple of Backyardigan DVDs out now, which means you don’t have to keep every episode on your TiVo any more.
The Snow Fort: Contains “The Snow Fort”, “The Yeti”, “Knights Are Brave and Strong”, and “Secret Mission”.
It’s Great To Be A Ghost: Contains “It’s Great To Be A Ghost”, “Monster Detectives”, “Key to the Nile”, and “Pirate Adventure”.
Polka Palace Party: Contains “Polka Palace Party”, “Heart of the Jungle”, “Viking Voyage”, and one I haven’t seen before — having tea in the Gobi desert. (Maybe it hasn’t aired yet?)
Â
Update 1/05/09: Yowsa. I am amazed at how lively this entry still is!
In response to many (many, many) comments on here: I came up with the idea that Uniqua is a ladybug from my then-4-year-old (who’s now about to be 9, but still loves the Backyardigans). I’m in complete agreement with everyone who says that Uniqua is just that: unique. I wasn’t paying a whole bunch of attention at the time, and I went with my 4-year-old’s assessment of Uniqua’s identity, ‘kay?

DOWNLOAD BACKYARDIGANS SONGS!
I recorded every song from each episode. The songs are in Windows Media (.wma) format. I put all the songs from each episode into a ZIP file and labeled it with the episode name. Each ZIP file is 3MB – 5MB.

The songs are so cute and catchy that my mother-in-law sings the Yeti song and Ridin the Range while walking around the house.I wish there was a soundtrack or apparel for my daughter. This is great programming that will hopefully be around for a long time.

The Backyardigans ROCK! Our 10 month old daughter LOVES the show (her mommy and papi are rather fond of it too). We are able to catch it twice a day sometimes, once in the morning at 11 and again at 2 in the afternoon. This is the only time she gets to watch any TV. It is so sweet to watch her get so excited — swaying to the music, clapping and laughing. Thank you to the creator!!! Uniqua is the BEST! Her voice is so sweet. I want her as my little friend.
Our little one is turning one is June. We need so Backyardigans loot for her party as well as gifts. Hurry it up!!! 😉

I watch the Yardigans with my grandson who is 2 years old. I am glad to read that I am not the only adult hooked on this show. I find myself humming or singing the songs through out the day. It makes me happy. Love all the songs. Favorite is the mermaid lullaby and “There’s an echo in the canyon. I thought Uniqua was an ant because of her head shape and antenas. Also love the Limbo Rock (How low can you go-limbo now) done on the spy episode which is a take on an actual rock and roll song. Wish I could remember the singer.Another excellent show is “Miss Spider and the Sunny Patch kids” which is also on Nick jr.

Hello there everyone. This show IS highly addictive. I was prompted to google a search for the BackYardigans in the middle of my work morning after I began singing the ‘secret agent’ song. Tyrone is kinda blunt and funny. Re: the maple syrup in the same episode, doo doo dooo.
I have the whole season on video tape because my mother recorded the shows for her grandkids. Now with TIVO you can do the same. So no worries when Saturday morning has come and gone.

The Backyardigans- I Think There are Some Subliminal Messages Involved

Author’s Product Rating
Pros
Amazing computer graphics
Cons
Turned my kids into zombies, curtailed imagination
The Bottom Line
The Backyardigans is only the second children’s show to make my “not allowed to watch” list. Sucks the imagination and life right out of my kids.
Full Review
Disease has been rampant in this house for almost 2 weeks. That means my girls have gotten to watch more TV than they usually do. One of the “new to them†shows they quickly latched on to was the Nick Jr offering The Backyardigans.
The Basics
The Backyardigans is a 30 minute animated television show aimed at preschoolers. There are currently 10 different episodes being shown. The Backyardigans airs on Nickelodeon during the Nick Jr programming block at 11 am and 1 pm and on CBS on Saturdays at 8 am.
The Plot
The Backyardigans is an animated show featuring 5 preschool friends, who find adventure every day in their own backyards. In each episode the characters meet to play together in their backyards, which all butt up to one another. The backyard scene fades to white and then to the location of their next adventure. he characters have gone in search of a Yeti, spent time in Egypt and even steered a Viking ship. Each show contains a new song and dance numbers. The shows end with the children returning the their backyards and heading for a snack. Like most children’s show each episode teaches some sort of lesson about being nice to one another.
The Characters
Each of the characters is a different animal and each has their own personality. Austin is a purple kangaroo. He is new to the neighborhood and little slow to join in. In fact he only appears in 4 of the 10 episodes broadcast so far. Pablo is a cute little blue penguin. He is very excitable. Tasha is a yellow hippopotamus. She looks sweet and girly on the outside, but she tends to be a bit bossy. Tyrone is a laid back orange moose. Rounding out the friends is Uniqua, a pink polka dotted animal of unknown origin. She is the jokester of the group.
Our Experience
From my adult perspective the show is very well done. I find the songs to be very catchy and the animation is well done. The dance moves of the characters are incredibly smooth and life-like. The children all sing very well, in fact a couple of the characters a done by two different children. One to provide the voice and another to sing.
Sounds like some harmless fun, doesn’t it. I’m a bit scared by what this show does to my children. The theme music starts and my children, 3 and 18 months old, are drawn to the TV. And there they sit and/or stand for the next 25 minutes transfixed on the television. They don’t move, they don’t speak, heck I’m not so sure they are even breathing. Nothing else on television (with the exception of the Law & Order theme) has that effect on them. The show turns both of my normally animated children into zombies, and quite frankly I don’t like it. I’m left only with the theory that there are some subliminal messages that my pregnancy hormones have left me immune to so that the allure of this show remains a mystery to me.
I’ve seen the term “imaginative†thrown around quite a bit in conjunction with this televisions show. My question is where? What is imaginative to the child watching about some very talented computer artists being able to change a background scene. Of course it is easy for the characters to pretend to be pirates, they have magically been yanked out of their backyards and plopped on a realistic boat bobbing on the seas. Imaginative would have been to drag a picnic table around the back yard and toss one of mom’s old sheet over the clothes line and pretend to be on a boat. All I have seen this show do is suck the imagination out of my 3 year old. She used to enjoy “sailing†our couch to the coffee table “island†in search of coconuts (no, I have no idea where this came from). But yesterday when I suggested that I could use some coconuts, our couch “doesn’t look like a boat†and she needed one “like the Backyardigans.†That was enough to permanently put The Backyardigans on my very short list of shows my children are not allowed to watch.
Allow me to explain further. When my 3 year old watches other preschool shows, she not only interacts with the television characters but with her younger sister and me as well. She enjoys pointing out objects to her little sister and often asks me questions about she is seeing. This lets me monitor what she is taking away from the shows. I am aware immediately that she isn’t quite getting “the point†of the episode. Sometimes simply explaining that an umbrella can offer protection from the sun as well as the rain is enough for her to make sense of the rest of the show. I can’t do that when she watches The Backyardigans because she doesn’t make a sound. Even if I try to talk to her right after an episode airs she doesn’t seem to have any idea what transpired. I wouldn’t mind the catatonic state so much if I could at least figure out what she is absorbing from the show. I have no doubt that something is seeping into her head, I just prefer to be able to address any misconceptions she may be walking away with during or immediately after the show. When incidents and questions crop up 2 or 3 weeks later I find it more difficult to explain a characters actions when a show is not fresh in either of our heads.
This leads me to two conclusions. Are there some sort of subliminal messages that suck the life force out of children for 25 minutes? Probably a little farfetched, but I wonder since this is the only show they watch in a zombie-like state. The second is that maybe my daughter can’t tell me what is taking away from each episodes because she isn’t taking anything away. The slick graphics and catchy tunes may real them in and hold their attention but the content dissolves away from their memories much like the backyard scene in the show does.
Children’s shows seems to fall into two broad categories, those that focus on academics like counting and the alphabet and those that teach life lessons. The Backyardigans falls into the later category as do many other television shows on for children. Unfortunately my daughter seems to lose track of the “be nice to others message†when it is sandwiched in high tech computer graphics and strange settings. Perhaps that is my fault as a parent. Maybe we haven’t taken enough family outings to haunted houses or snuck into museums after hours, but some how I doubt that. There are plenty of other shows that teach sharing and caring without the blank stares I see only when The Backyardigans is on. My 3 year old relates better to being nice and helpful when it is a context she is familiar with, be it school, the park, the post office or just playing at home. In this house the pretty packaging of The Backyardigans drowns out the messages.
So, what is The Backyardigans? Sure there is lots of music, but I don’t need a television for that. Between their father and me my children all ready listen to a wide variety of music. In my opinion this show is fluff. Now there is nothing wrong with occasionally watching TV just for the fun of it, but I still want to know what impressions my children are left with. I occasionally pop in a Loonie Tunes tape and sit down and watch some “classic†Bugs Bunny or Roadrunner cartoons with them. I enjoy listening to them laugh at the cartoon slap-stick humor when Wyle E. Coyote falls off a cliff yet again. When we watch these fun cartoon my children are full of questions so I know where their focus is. My children aren’t put into a trance by Loonie Tunes leaving me to wonder what is entering their brains, on the contrary both are quite animated and full of questions, even just the simple “what’s that†from my 1 ½ year old. The complete absurdity of the settings of these cartoons does not seem to stifle my daughter’s imagination the way that The Backyardigans did. Bugs Bunny doesn’t pretend to teach anything it is there purely for some fun on the couch with mom.
Presumable they liked The Backyardigans when they watched, but I really can’t be sure. Since I can’t be sure they are enjoying it nor can I tell what they are taking away from the show, I can really think of better things for them to do with 25 minutes of their day. And since my 3 year old seems to want her backyard to work like the one on the show I just cannot see any reason to watch The Backyardigans.
Final Thoughts
I would much rather have my children yell back at Dora the Explorer than to have them stare silently at the television screen. I would rather have them pointing out clues to the dimwitted Joe or Steve on Blue’s Clues than to watch a show that fails to engage them in any way. I would rather have my children watch the Higglytown kids bounce around unsupervised in the library or grocery store than watch animals plucked out of their backyards and dropped on some wild search for a non-existent creature. I would rather have them knock over a few toys trying to imitate JoJo’s backward walk or other silly dance than have them not move a muscle while computer animated characters complete complex dance steps.

I completely disagree with Abu Abdullah, though, and think that the show promotes imagination, whilst shows like Dora and Blue’s Clues promote observation/communication skills. Needless to say, the former is innumerably more important than the latter!

hi. we get the backyardigans here in the philippines on nick jr. my daughter goes nuts when its on. she knows all the titles and the songs and the dances! anyway, the episode i really like castaways especially when they start dancing to “who’s there?”. my daughter likes secret mission and the key to the nile. i thought uniqua was an ant with an attitude… i like austin just because he gets so little airtime; isn’t he an aardvark?
Minadiaho says
I like the way the show is a musical with at least 4 songs and episode. My favorite episodes are the Castaways, Polka Palace Party, The heart of the jungle and the one when they are prospectors and scientists. My favorite songs are the float flutter fly one on the questing episode and the dancing to the wormen polka song. I like Tasha the most then a tie between Pablo and Uniqua then Tyrone and Austin. I like this show because its a musical.
Out of the twenty episodes, Austin is on more then Tasha.
Austin seems to be a different size each episode. Tyrone is the biggest and Pablo and sometimes uniqua is the smallest.

I LOVE the Backyardigans and so does my 10 month old daughter. This is the only show that actually sits and watches. She loves to dance to the songs. My husband and I love the songs too. I love all of the characters but my favorite is Uniqua. My daughter likes Tyrone, I guess it’s because her uncle’s name is Tyrone. Whenever he comes over he sings Tyrone’s parts and she just smiles and giggles. Her birthday is coming in July. I wish that they had Backyardigans birthday supplies.

My daughter is only 13 months old, and she loves the Backyardigans – (Ok, I love then too, my wife knows all the songs). When we put on the show, she stops what she is doing – screaming, crying, winning, not eating – and she becomes entranced with the Backyardigans. She becomes happy and will open her mouth – although sometimes we have to pause the show to get her to eat. This show has made our lives easier. I totally agree with all the above comments. My nephew is only 15 months, and no matter what he is getting into, as soon as the theme song from the Backyardigans begins, he dashes to the room where it is coming from. I also love them very much so, sometimes I think I may enjoy them more than he does. The way that they move and dance, is so adorable. There shows are so filled with dancing and singing, and imagination. Which I think is perfect for the little ones that are growing up and learning everyday.
