This new show, Lazytown, just debuted on Nick Jr. Sophia asked to watch it. Then she wanted to watch more. The show’s been on a week and it’s the only thing she wants to watch.
Given that it’s a show that wants to inspire kids to get up and move, I’m not sure that’s a good sign. But it’s actually a very, very entertaining show.
Lazytown is the story of (where else?) Lazytown, where both superhero Sportacus and supervillain Robbie Rotten live. Sportacus is into health and activity and eating good food. Robbie wants everyone to be lazy and eat junk food.
Eight-year-old Stephanie moves to town and becomes friends with Sportacus and the other kids in town (all of whom are puppets), and they foil Robbie’s schemes. And periodically Stephanie, in her bright pink hair and bright pink dress, bursts into a technopop number.
Do not get high before watching this show. I’m just saying.
I sat down to watch this show with Sophia and I definitely had a good time. The themes of the episodes are pretty obvious, but entertainingly done. The importance of getting your sleep, the importance of eating well and choosing an apple over candy, the importance of being honest over telling a lie. I just wish Sophia wanted to get up and bop with Stephanie when she’s doing one of her techno numbers.
The strange accents of Sportacus and Robbie Rotten, the bright colors, and the technopop interludes made me wonder: is this Scandinavian or something? So I looked it up on the Web and no, it’s Icelandic. Yes, Icelandic. And it’s evidently this huge conglomerate, with books and stage shows and all sorts of spinoffs.
My question for my vast audience of Icelandic readers (hi there): was this show originally broadcast in English? Or did they do two versions: the English for export and Icelandic for home?
Update: I’ve closed comments on this entry because I’m getting very, very tired of deleting comments about how “hot” Stephanie is. Guys, she’s 13 oe 14. Find someone your own age. (And if I’ve let any such comments go by, let me know: n k a ( a t ) n o b o d y – k n o w s – a n y t h i n g . c o m.

SEE WHAT I GO THROUGH! I mean, Bridget doesn’t like the Lazytown songs! (gasp) But Bridget, you have to admit, Mads puts on a good performance. I give her a 10. Lol.

wow have people been talking about this show now for allmost 8 months nonstop. Maggi (magnus “sportacus” schewing) lives 300 feet away from me (seltj.nes Iceland) and has done a great job, but WOOOW he did not expect this, the show is for kids but I think the main group following it are adults, rave-craving danceTechno maniacs who all want to dress up like stephany (solla stirda in Icelandic) and having sportacus whipping their fat cheeseburger asses, dang thats kinky.

Just weighing in to say I have become totally captured by the series. Forget the kids. They’re at school. It’s a bright pickmeup in the morning before I head to work.

I was wondering if anyone here knew what Magnus’ last name was? I am trying to make a gift for a fan and find websites about lazy town or Magnus.
asdf says
his name is Magnus Scheving ( Magnús Scheving )

My 18 month old adores the show! She dances and sings to the music! I also enjoy the show immensely – a great way to start the day! Plus Sportacus is a ‘Hottie’! Stephanie is really sweet, cute and smart – what a great role model for young girls!

I’m an elementary school teacher in southern California. There is much emphasis on major content areas of learning, however physical education is not at the top of the list. Thank you so much to Lazytown creator Magnus Scheving for acting on the urgent need to raise the focus of physical education for our children. If there is one things kids do is watch T.V. It’s brilliant to use the T.V. as a vessel for learning. Why didn’t Disney think of it?

I love the show but I think it would be better if they had the subtitles 4 the songs like bing bang cuz thats my favorite song. OOOO and I’m almost 13 and I love the show so much u make it fun 4 me 2 watch everytime I have a chance…..Thank You

Wow my fiance and I love this show. Every Saturday morning that is the only show we watch. We looked up the pictures and stuff of the real actors and WOW ROBBIE IS FINE though so is Sporticus. Anyway we just adore little Stephanie and hope when we have kids that we have one just like her. I’ve stumbled around a few sites where it does seem adult are more into this then kids. I’m not suprised its awesome. We were just flipping through the channels when we saw Stephanie and I made my fiance stop to watch it. Lucky I did. Anyway this is a great site and I’ve enjoyed hearing all the cool facts everyone puts on here and I got a good laugh over Sporticus translating to “sport elf”

I love this show as much as my three year old son does! We dance, we “power jump” and we think apples are “sports candy.” Besides that, Magnus Scheving is easy on the eyes. Many kids’ shows just drive me insane, but not Lazy Town.

Hi I’m icelandic and read your comment about Lazytown.
It´s been really popular in Iceland since I think 1995 and it called Latibær here. I went to school with one of the actors (Robbie) and am related to Sportacus (well it´s a really small country haha)
They sell lots of products here, have their own money that kids can collect and buy healthy things with.
It has only been shown in icelandic until last year.

A litle info on Magnus for those of you who are interested.
Magnus Scheving is a two-time European champion, and a silver medallist in the World Aerobics Championship.
He is a world-class athlete, and an acclaimed entertainer and writer in his native Iceland. During his travels around the world, lecturing on health and fitness, parents were always asking Scheving about exercise and nutrition for children.
In response to this, he created LazyTown in 1991 with the book Go, Go Lazy Town! The property has since built into a household name in Iceland, with businesses including publishing, live theatrical performances and a radio station.

OMG! I watched this show ONCE and I am hooked! I am 19 years old and I was channel surfing one day. Well, I was flipping through the channels when I came across Nick Jr. with a show I had never seen (or heard of for that matter) before. So I said, what the hell, and after that Sportacus just became my new hero! I really look up to him, and hope one day I will get to meet him. By the way, Sportacus has encouraged me to eat right, and exercise. So ya know what? I have been eating healthier, and going to the gym and trying to be my best cause I do NOT wanna let Sportacus down! Before watching the show I was around 170lbs, and now I am back down to 135lbs(the proper weight for my height) Now if I could only get my hands on a costume or any Lazy Town merchandise for that matter….

Cameron my 3 year old loves to exercise with sportacus, and thinks steph is wow

I don’t know how this show is so atticting! I’m a 20 year college student and I LIKE THE SHOW! Maybe because I was always involved with athletics and finally, after my childhood was over and done with, a show like Lazytown comes out with an athletic superhero. I like the show so much, I even called the Lazytown Entertainment headquarters in Iceland to let them know how much I enjoy the show and how much I appriate Magnus for coming up with such a great idea. Never the less Robbie is humorous and Stephanie is a cute girl. Thats what I have to say about the show.

I think that I have gone crazy over this show. My brother made a cd for me to listen to with my three yr old son. He wants to do things like Sportacus, like flips, and running real fancy, push-ups, cart wheels, bounce off the walls.
He will definitly be in gymnastics before the year is out or he’s going to ruin my furniture.
We just watch it together and dance to the music and we love Stephanie’s beautiful voice and Sportacus’s, if it is him singing. I ‘ve thought about it and have listened closely and I think it is him. He is sooo awesome, I want a big Sportacus poster for my bedroom, I don’t think my hubby will mind, he knows that I am looney over Magnus and we have fun with it. He is the hottiest hotty, smart, talented, he is just wonderful.

I just returned from the beach and had so much fun introducing my family to lazy town. I read somewhere in here that Stephanie reads sometimes,I hope so, you are so talented and adorable. My brother knowing how my son and I love this show made a music disk with all your songs, I will be buying them when they come out I just could not wait ,my sons 3.very strong, he tries to do things like Sportacus, we need an exercise video, I think that would be a great we listened to your music all the way from shelby nc to surf side sc and all the way home again and talked about your show and how we think it is just a wonderful thing for children and how glad we are to have it. I was wondering what the future is of lazy town, the show will not be the same without you and Magnus, you two make the show and I doubt anyone else would ever be able to fill your shoes. What are you going to do???
Will there be a lazy town movie. I would love to play Stephanie’s mother, with pink hair and the works, wouldn’t that be fun? Later

Hello everyone!! I’m a sucker for foreign men…so it doesn’t really surprise me that I think Stefan Karl Stefansson is one of the sexiest men I’ve ever seen. Alas, when his website was being redone, there were two pictures on there. One headshot…and one of him squatting. And ladies, there was a wedding ring there 🙁 OH, the agony!!

hi! im 21 from tulsa, i have a 1 year old son that loves music and loves to dance so, yeah, he loves this show. and so do i! the music is great for a kids show. i actually got curious how someone as athletic as sportacus got into doing a kids show and looked him up.. for those that didnt know it seems that he is the one that created it..magnus sheving. i have to admit my fave character may be robbie, just cause i think he’s funny. ‘You blinked your eyes! yeah im too fast for that’ maybe its the accent. 🙂

I am a 21 year old college student in the US and for some reason I can’t get enough of LazyTown! I love the basic characters with names that reflect their personalities. Though there are very few characters, each one basically reflects portions of everyone’s personalities: stingy, pixel (kids these days know so much about computers), Mayor Meanswell, Miss Busybody, etc.
The bright colors and fast paced song and dance breaks are mystifying to small children as well as seniors in college (apparently). There are SO many children’s shows out there right now, it’s great to see a new one that incorporates both humans and puppets. The morals are very obvious but it’s great that the kids in the show usually make decisions on their own and understand why certain things are not good for them. Stephanie is adorable, even though she’s actually a teenager. I hate to see them replace her once she ‘develops’ past the 8 year old she plays.
I don’t have any kids of my own, but if I did, I’m sure they would love LazyTown and all of its energy. I’m so glad to read stories of how much it affects others. Since television and computers are becoming cheap babysitters these days, I love that the kids are learning good morals and healthy tips.

I hate it! Not the show of corse, but the fact that i am in school when it is on! I love the show, and am happy to hear steph is 13, not 18 like i thought, *grins*. Any way, if they could put the show on at 600 or 630 in the morning i would make a point of watching it every day… maybe it would wake me up for math…

Is it just me, or does Robbie Rotten remind anyone of the count from “A Series of Unfortunate Events”? He’s got the chin, the slightly psychotic demeanor, wirey frame, quasi-pinstripe suit and just generally plots in the same way.
I gotta say though, what really hooked me about this show is Stephanie. That girl is just too adorable.
Victoria Thompson says
I am a babysitter and the baby I watch loves the show. I also love it. It makes me want to get up and dance. I don’t know how anyone can have as much energy as Sportagus does.
