This new show, Lazytown, just debuted on Nick Jr. Sophia asked to watch it. Then she wanted to watch more. The show’s been on a week and it’s the only thing she wants to watch.

Given that it’s a show that wants to inspire kids to get up and move, I’m not sure that’s a good sign. But it’s actually a very, very entertaining show.

sportacus2.jpg Lazytown is the story of (where else?) Lazytown, where both superhero Sportacus and supervillain Robbie Rotten live. Sportacus is into health and activity and eating good food. Robbie wants everyone to be lazy and eat junk food. robbierotten.jpg

stephanie_1.jpgEight-year-old Stephanie moves to town and becomes friends with Sportacus and the other kids in town (all of whom are puppets), and they foil Robbie’s schemes. And periodically Stephanie, in her bright pink hair and bright pink dress, bursts into a technopop number.

Do not get high before watching this show. I’m just saying.

I sat down to watch this show with Sophia and I definitely had a good time. The themes of the episodes are pretty obvious, but entertainingly done. The importance of getting your sleep, the importance of eating well and choosing an apple over candy, the importance of being honest over telling a lie. I just wish Sophia wanted to get up and bop with Stephanie when she’s doing one of her techno numbers.

The strange accents of Sportacus and Robbie Rotten, the bright colors, and the technopop interludes made me wonder: is this Scandinavian or something? So I looked it up on the Web and no, it’s Icelandic. Yes, Icelandic. And it’s evidently this huge conglomerate, with books and stage shows and all sorts of spinoffs.

My question for my vast audience of Icelandic readers (hi there): was this show originally broadcast in English? Or did they do two versions: the English for export and Icelandic for home?

Update: I’ve closed comments on this entry because I’m getting very, very tired of deleting comments about how “hot” Stephanie is. Guys, she’s 13 oe 14. Find someone your own age.   3. Just to put my two cents in. I think Lazytown is Great. It bugged me the first couple of times I saw it but then I left it on for my 19&3/4ths month old (she was 18 months at the time) and she just loves it! She hates all NickJr shows except it and Backyardigans. We dont watch much t.v. bu tthis is one we rarely miss.
    I too looked for the merch and the only merchandise I know of is the Icelandic merchandise (see Lazytown.com) and even the Lazytown corp. is sold out.

  4. I really enjoy watching Lazytown with my four year old son. It has a positive upbeat feel and promotes good television in a world where there is so much wrong being shown on tv anymore. Thank you Mr. Sheving for creating this awesome show. I want to see more along with my son.

  7. Lazytown is the best,most fun,and danceist show in the world I have never seen a show like this please keep it on it is the best best best best best best best show ever!!!! And Stephanie,Sportacus,Robbie Rotten and Ziggy etc. are the besr actors ever!!!

  8. Hearing the tunes in Icelandic at the website from EmEs was cool. My grandfather was from Sweden and died when I was a kid. I’m sure the languages aren’t exactly the same, but it reminded me of him. Fun to hear in its native tongue.

  9. I just wanted to let you all know that I think LazyTown is absolutely wonderful!!!! I have 3 daughters (9, and twins almost 2)and let me tell you when that show is on I we stop whatever we maybe doing to watch it!!! We live on a military base and I have been calling all of my friends to let them know about the show!!!! I also call a few select friends to let them know that Sportacus is on. OMG I just love that man…when I am in a bad mood he just makes things better. My friends think I am crazy but I dont care he is a cutie-patootie and he is deffinately on my “to do list”!!! As a matter of fact the twins go down for a nap and I can watch the first show of the day by myself :oP If you all know where I can find some pictures of this handsome man that would be wonderful (with or with out his costume)(I mean in plain clothes).

    We love Lazy Town and think that Nick Jr. is doing a great job of providing shows to the younger crowd. Keep up the good work!!!

  11. I was surfing http://www.imdb.com you can find alot of information about Lazytown if you go to lazytown and look at the people working in Lazytown. Gudmumdur Thor (Ziggy) has photogallery and official site. The cinematographer, Tomas Orn T, has also official site where you can see video previews and production photogallery. Magnus Sheving has a mini biography and Julianna Rose has a photographs from Oklahoma.

  12. Mr. Magnus Scheving created an awesome show to get kids motivated. If you watch this show and it doesn’t put you into a mood to get up and dance, then maybe there is something wrong with you. Also Mr. Scheving is a very handsome looking man if I may say so. Also if you would see the website for Stefan Karl as Robbie, he is also good looking w/o the makeup.

  13. wow this much people actually enjoy lazytown im not alone. its strange cuz im in hawaii and im pretty sure nobody cares about this show but its great. nice colors, techno music, and characters its just overwhelming how they all fit. im loving this show and 13 year old julianna rose mauriello. hehe(im 14).

  14. My three and four year old girls love Lazytown and never want to miss it. My three year old used to be really picky about eating fruit and veggies but now we say “What does Sportacus say?” “It’s sports candy!” and she’ll eat them. And she also dances like crazy to the songs. As the mom who ends up watching this stuff with them it’s really a refreshing break from the tedium and repetition of things like Barney etc and it sends great messages. And I have to agree with previous posters–Sportacus is super hot! Can’t think of a kid’s tv star who’s better looking (he’s only competing with the likes of Spongebob and co, but still). It makes the show worth watching just to see Magnús Scheving do his handstand push-ups, mid-air splits and all the rest of the amazing things he does. The man is STRONG, and flexible, and good with kids–how can we resist? Plus he saves a little kitten in one episode–aww! (Alas, where is the Sportacus desktop wallpaper? When will there be a North American Sportacus live? 😉 ) And of course you have to respect a man who creates, stars in, etc etc his own show and entertainment empire that’s good for kids (kind of like Smoochy in that movie, Death to Smoochy without being as saccharine). Probably they counted on Sportacus being very marketable to all us moms and “desperate housewives” but hey, if I’m part of the target demographic I don’t care 🙂 I’m sure this one’s going to be a phenomenon. And PS, my mom’s born in Helsinki and no, Finland isn’t technically Scandinavian.

  18. I love the show so much.I cant help it at all.It started off when I watched it with my 5 year old bro,he also loves it but not like me.If I would have a chance to meet Julianna aka Stephanie that would be one of the greatest days of my life.I hope my dream comes true.

  21. WOW! i love LazyTown! i am a nanny and when i am over here the kid-os have to watch it! i think stephanie is so talented and the show is awesome–teaches little kids good lessons-keep up the good work!!

  22. I LOVE THIS SHOW. I’m 13 years old with a love for cartoon-like shows. I usually watch Jacob Two Two after school, and I was disappointed when it got shifted half an hour later. But when I decided to hang around and see what show had been added, I became OBSESSED! I watch it regularly like every day now, after school(But, whoah, I don’t miss Jacob Two Two!!!). Most of my friends think I’m crazy already (and I’m proud of it, too) but they’re all obsessed with Strawberry Shortcake and Dora the Explorer, so that’s ok!

    SPORTACUS! You gotta love him! I mean the character, aside from being creator, producer, bla bla bla. Even SUPERMAN couldn’t do half those moves, and he’s ANIMATED! Ohmygod! And that AWESOME mustashe!!!! I just want to POKE IT! I don’t know WHAT i’d do to meet Magnus Scheving, he’s amazing!

    Oh, and did anybody know that for some of the moves Sportacus has a stunt double? Forget his name, but hes right hot, too.

    Does anybody know where I can get some LazyTown Merch.? I remember seeing a pink sweater with a star on it that said ‘Stephanie’ on it, and I thought it was on the http://www.lazytown.com but now I can’t find it! I am a poor unfortunate soul, now:(

  24. I am not scared to admit it, I am 18 years young and I LOVE LazyTown. It is so much fun. Sportacus isn’t too hard on the eyes either. I’m just sort of upset that next semester I’ll be stuck listening to my professors drone and not LazyTowns high energy music.

  25. OK, hi everyone. First off, I came here because I was looking for the lyrics for the theme song to prove to my little brother (6) that I DO know it. I am 13 and have read everything here. Also, my brother LOVES it! I can’t help, but say the music rocks! I feel like dancing to it even though I’m a 13 yr. old guy! Anyway, one word for the show, “WOW!”

  27. I adore the show as does my 2 year old. I live in Germany and get tapes of it in the mail from my mother in the US. I have watched the same 6 or 7 shows for months and I am still in love with this show. The music is infectious and my daughter dances and jumps and sings the whole time. Robbie Rotten makes me laugh all the time with his villanous half-baked schemes. Stephan Karl is marvelous in the role and I could watch him all day with his silly facial expressions and perfect delivery of his dialogue. Julianna Rose Mauriello is just the cutest little girl and I love her too.

    I am just aching to get this on DVD and a soundtrack would be wonderful too! I keep the graphic from the website on my computer desktop for my daughter to see and she delights at the very sight of sporticus.

    I would also like to add that she wants me to call her Siggy and Sporticandy because she likes him the best of all the charactors.

    I hope this show goes on for a long while…

  28. I wrote to lazy town in Iceland begging for merchandise and asking where to send letters to help speed things up and they said that some shirts should be available soon on nickjr.com. Also they forwarded my comments to nickelodeon. SO if you want to write to let them know you’re a fan you can find the email addresses on the lazytown.com website!

  29. I’m 16 and I have to confess that I love watching LazyTown. I got my 18-year-old brother hooked too, and we try to get our mom to watch it more often. Great stuff.

  30. I LOVE LAZYTOWN!!!! ROBBIE ROTTEN IS SOOOOOOO HOT!!!…im 15 years old, and my 6 year old brother got me hooked. at first i thought it was an annoying show, and then one day i watched an episode… it was GREAT!!! i want to meet the cast!!

  31. Im 18 and I think Julianna (stephanie) is really pretty and talented. She has good moves and her smile is beautiful. I hope she becomes real famous when shes older.

    I am going into the military navy SEAL’s special forces. When i get out she will be of age and i hope to meet her someday.

  35. This Show is awesome, im 14 and i watch this show almost everyday when i can. I like the techno songs thats stephanie sings, and i hate to say this but shes hot. I cant wait to see an episode where Robbie Rotten actually defeats Sportacus!!!

  37. I’ve only seen one episode of LazyTown, but I loved it like crazy! My little sister (she’s 17, almost 18; I’m 19, almost 20) was home sick the other day and we decided to see what Nick Jr. was showing now, as compared with shows ‘back in the day.’ We weren’t particulary impressed, but then LazyTown came on and that all changed! We both love movies like “Amelie” and “City of the Lost Children”, and this series reminds us of a strange crossbreed of the two, with some of the old Hugga Bunch (anyone heard of it?) movie mixed in. I’m going to start watching this on the days when I’m not in class at 9:30!

I a techno fan and big with dancing… i have taken many dancing classes and i have to say i enjoy lazy town… i love most of the techno dance songs that the show has produced not all of them… it has good messages and i can only laugh when i hear somone saying old man and young girl ohhhh!! u know what i mean… well i am over 18 and i cant help my self to dance to the songs i hear… and lastly stephanie isnt lip sinking… ive read that she is played by a actress who has done broadway and robbie and sporticus are also played by famous actors or broadway ppl i dont remeber… well get up all u sleepy heads, brush 20 times up and down, and do what u want since ur a pirate ^^; if u dont watch the show u have no clue what im talking about lol

    I wish Sportacus would LEAVE little Stephanie ALONE! I see the way he LOOKS AT HER, grabs her and makes her dance with him!! Him and HIS MUSCLES–he thinks he’s so great, with all his flips–he makes me SICK!!! I’d help Robbie Rotten kick his butt if I were there! She shouldn’t be hanging around with Sportacus! It’s NOT natural for this grown man to be hanging around with her so much. I mean, I WANT TO HANG AROUND HER TOO (if only I could find LazyTown). I DON’T LIKE HIM trying to impress her all the time with his flips and smug, “I’m better than you because I’m a jock” attitude.

  42. I LOVE this show I got interrested by my favourite cousin samsam and Mohamed. They said that it comes on the weekdays. Since then they made my fall in love with this show and I wated just to tell you to NEVER GET RIDE OF IT! If you do me and my sisters will cry our selves to sleep every night.   43. I LOVE Lazytown cause, the first time I saw it during the holidays I just had to record the shows! But i only have six episodes of Lazytown!
    But I like the show alot that I could just keep on watching it over,and over,again!
    My little brother is 2 yrs. old and his favorite hero is Sportacus cause he does alot of flips and jumps. I really want to see the show but i am in school. But I cant see it nomore, only on the holidays or I get out early from school!
    Can you put the show on at 4:00 so everyone can watch it cause i know that whoever is in school that likes to watch it can get to see it, instead, of missing it.Thank You

  47. ok its a great show very cool for a bunch of reasons already stated 8 million times on here , i had to complain about how many scary people are sayign a little girl is hot ,ok she is supposed to be like 8 thats wrong guys ok , in real life she is like 13 yeah thats pretty far from 18 or 21 ok , ok , i just hope whoever put that she is hot was like a 9 year old boy otherwise i will cry , no i wont cry but that would be gross and wrong , ok sorry about my ranting just had to point that out , yeah great shows thumbs up and all that

  48. Wow.. i am 15 and me and my friend are addicted to this show. Stephanie is a little cutie, and Sportacus is wicked amazing with all the flips he does.. my little sister turned me on to this show and i love it. Me and my friend mike are the only kids we know at school who love this show. Every day after school he comes over and we watch it. I record Bing Bang of every episode, then we watch the recording like 10 times in a row.. Such a cool show. Can’t wait till merchandise is available!!

  49. my son is three and he absolutlety loves lazytown. we ust dicovered it about a month ago. Now he runs around the house doing summersaults and pretending to be sporticus. I commend the creater on a job well done. What a great show

  50. I’m 25 years old, i happened to be channel surfing nick JR and there it was…

    Lazytown

    Now I cant get enough of it, i watch it every day .

    Truthfully this show has inspired me somewhat, magnus (sporticus) is 40 years old and he looks fantastic! I have really let myself go over the past 3 years but now i have a role model to look up to.

    Yes i know its a kids show, but seeing him and what he can do at an age when people are supposed to be “slowing down” is incredible, a monument to the human spirit really.

    Though in some ways it depresses me, at my age he was winning fitness awards in iceland and beyond as one of the best fitness people in the world. im sitting at home playing on a computer and trying to go to school but oh well.

    one can only hope to aspire to the greatest of expectations eh?

    At any rate, I would like to thank magnus for creating such an inspiring show, and i really hope it has a long run in the spotlight and makes him alot of money.

    PS: if anyone knows who composes the techno for lazytowns music Please name the band, i really like the sorta mid 90’s poppy techno beat 🙂
