This new show, Lazytown, just debuted on Nick Jr. Sophia asked to watch it. Then she wanted to watch more. The show’s been on a week and it’s the only thing she wants to watch.
Given that it’s a show that wants to inspire kids to get up and move, I’m not sure that’s a good sign. But it’s actually a very, very entertaining show.
Lazytown is the story of (where else?) Lazytown, where both superhero Sportacus and supervillain Robbie Rotten live. Sportacus is into health and activity and eating good food. Robbie wants everyone to be lazy and eat junk food.
Eight-year-old Stephanie moves to town and becomes friends with Sportacus and the other kids in town (all of whom are puppets), and they foil Robbie’s schemes. And periodically Stephanie, in her bright pink hair and bright pink dress, bursts into a technopop number.
Do not get high before watching this show. I’m just saying.
I sat down to watch this show with Sophia and I definitely had a good time. The themes of the episodes are pretty obvious, but entertainingly done. The importance of getting your sleep, the importance of eating well and choosing an apple over candy, the importance of being honest over telling a lie. I just wish Sophia wanted to get up and bop with Stephanie when she’s doing one of her techno numbers.
The strange accents of Sportacus and Robbie Rotten, the bright colors, and the technopop interludes made me wonder: is this Scandinavian or something? So I looked it up on the Web and no, it’s Icelandic. Yes, Icelandic. And it’s evidently this huge conglomerate, with books and stage shows and all sorts of spinoffs.
My question for my vast audience of Icelandic readers (hi there): was this show originally broadcast in English? Or did they do two versions: the English for export and Icelandic for home?
Update: I’ve closed comments on this entry because I’m getting very, very tired of deleting comments about how “hot” Stephanie is. Guys, she’s 13 oe 14. Find someone your own age. (And if I’ve let any such comments go by, let me know: n k a ( a t ) n o b o d y – k n o w s – a n y t h i n g . c o m.

I just have to say the sheer number of comments I get about how “hot” Stephanie is really disturb me — guys, she’s THIRTEEN years old. GROW UP.

I adore this show. I saw one episode and was hooked. I love the songs, and the gorgeous Sportacus. I’m fourteen, and all my friends think it’s pretty weird that I adore a kids show, but it’s just so much fun!

Is there a soundtrack for Lazytown anywhere?!?! The songs and lyrics are GREAT, and of course, never mind that Sportacus is really cute. One negative, though, is that they HAVE TO come out with new episodes!!! The reruns are getting a bit dry! My kids still love it, though!

i love lazy town its the best show my sisters are so dumb they acually think that lazy town is dumb but it isn’t its the best!:):)

Sportacus is totally hot and gives something for us desparate housewives and moms to look at while our adorable children get positive information in a fun show. It’s the best of both worlds. Maybe the cast could make some public appearances so our kids could DRAG us there (*wink). LOL

HI, I have been reading some of the comments and had to share! I absolutely LOVE for my son to watch this…he wants to play and have fun and dance and sing and NO OTHER SHOWS promote such healthy activity in this way! Aiden is going on three and has been watching LazyTown for pretty close to a year (I remember the big lead up to the first epi and WE WATCHED it) I think Stephanie is an absolute doll…what a cutie! She is such a sweetheart on the show…Sportacus is GREAT! Aiden thinks that he is Sportacus! LOL He puts on a blue cap (THAT HE MADE ME MAKE FOR HIM) and he runs around the house spinning and doing the trademark “GO GO Lazytown”! He saves me from all kinds of household items and that mean ole Robbie Rotten is out cat “Christina”! I of course, play Stephanie! He has quite an imagination and LazyTown seems to fuel it! The dances and songs are delightfully FRESH and FUN. I am not really a big fan of puppets, but these are cute! I like how they capture the personalities of large groups of children…for instance…PIXEL and the COMPUTERS and GAMES, ZIGGY and CANDY and SWEETS! I like that despite how mean Robbie is, when in need…they even help him! Kudos to Julianna and Magnus and all the rest for a wonderful show that I am PROUD to say my son watches:)

I think LazyTown is a great show. My 7 year old and I watched the show’s Memorial Day Marathon and he couldn’t get enough of it. Sportucus has even convinced him to eat apples instead of candy…my son ran around the house after he ate an apple. GREAT JOB to the cast of the show!!!

Wow! Great to see so many fans of this show! I’m a media analysis and criticism student and a couple days a week I leave later for class and what’s on but LAZYTOWN! It is truly bizarre to me how these Icelanders managed to tap into every basic little kid response in my mind at once – visual, active, singing…it’s insane! I was just channel surfing one day and there was Sportacus jumping through the air to greet Stephanie and I just had to stop. Maybe it’s the comic book geek in my head that made me stop (superhero an’ all) but the production quality and the songs made me stay. I just can’t help but feel energized by the techno-pop beats and Sportacus ain’t too bad to look at, either.
The show just has that special something to it where not only is it addictive but I’ve actually found myself getting better about workouts and what I eat. Not to mention humming the tunes in class. Crazily hypnotic and yet a fantastic show – I completely plan to get the DVDs when they come out so my kids can watch them in a few years because this show is far better than a lot of what America’s producing right now. I think I’ll write a term paper on it!
