What the hell is Blue Moon ice cream? I had never heard of it before this thread.

I remember Blue Moon, and from what i do remember it was first made by Mooneys ice Cream here in good old Michigan and they have the original recipe, which you wont ever get. it was also believed it was vanilla ice cream with a tad bit of rasberry cream…but i wont argue with anyone about it, but i do know a retired mooneys production worker who told me this. unfortunately, he is no longer with us. but if you check with Mooneys, im sure they can confirm its origin and flavors. Mooneys makes the best ever Blue moon.

Being a former Yooper from Upper Michigan and now living in Chicago, I long for the days of eating Blue Moon ice cream wondering what in the world it tastes like. I think after 34 years, I may have the answer. I am between either cake batter or pistachio without the nuts?

I have never tried Blue Moon Icecream but after reading all this…I plan to. As for Blue Licorice Icecream…It comes in 4L tubs at Safeway now(so does tiger in 2L). Usually if you look you can find Licorice at the odd icecream shop…I live in Vancouver and I can think of a few places where I’ve been able to get it. Wish me luck on my quest to try Blue Moon!

I’ve been Blue Mooning at Jones’ Homemade Ice Cream in Baldwin, MI for over 50 years! I remember Mr. and Mrs. Jones scooping out double dipped cones in the 50’s. The decor there hasn’t changed in all that time, except they don’t sell comic books any more. A trip to the country is not complete without a stop at Jones.’ I’ve also had this treat at House of Flavors in nearby Ludington, MI, but it tastes a little different. I was at Jones’ last weekend, and was told the flavor was almond/burnt almond, and that’s exactly how it tasted. At House of Flavors, they said it was nutmeg, and I could taste that, too. I vote for Jones’ because it’s dear to my heart. There is no citrus taste at all! No pineapple or orange or anything like that. I was delighted to see posts from other people who’ve experienced Jones’!

Real Blue Moon is the best!
I grew up in Whitewater, WI and remember getting Blue Moon at a small Ice Cream shop on Main St.
Every once in while I’ll see it at a shop and rarely is it what I remember. A guy at Baskin Robbins once tried to tell me that’s what he had and it was nasty bubblegum, yuk. I live in Milwaukee now and you can find a half gallon of it at almost any grocery store.

Sherer’s Ice Cream on North Main St. in Dayton across from Forest Park Plaza sells it by the cone or 1/2 gallon. Tastes just like I remember it as a kid at Shaver’s in Eaton OH.

I live in the Fox Cities in WIsconsin. I just bought Blue Moon from Cubs, made by Cedar Crest in Wisconsin. It is the best I have ever had. I believe their website cedarcresticecream mentioned that they have stores in mi and I cant remember where else that have it.

WOW!When I was younger I first tried Blue Moon Ice cream and ever since I haven’t been able to get enough of it. The though is that I grew up in Ohio and I only knew of two places that sold it. So when I moved to California I was really dissapointed that they didn’t have my favorite ice cream!about six months ago I moved back to Ohio but Ice cream season is over and I don’t want to have to but a six gallon container of it (I would be facing the terrible repracusions afterwards) so i’m on a mission to find my ice cream… I tell everyone the true reason I came back was simply for the ice cream!

Burger Hut in alliance has the best. No nuts of fruit, really creamy. I always thought it tasted like fruity pebbles. Anyway, Burger Hut is for sale. They are still open now but don’t know how much longer.

The only reason I ever go into Meijer is to get some Blue Moon ice cream made by Strohs. It doesn’t seem as popular down here in Cincinnati as it is in the Detroit area. Every time I go to Meijer here, the ice cream has carmelized and has a syrupy crust. I took a friend to Meijer to try some and he hated it. I wish the ice cream was more popular, we would find it in more places than just Meijer down here.

Well, I also grew up in Ludington MI and this is where I was always told Blue Moon Ice Cream originated. Right there at the House of Flavors. It IS the best Ice Cream in the world and if you ask the employees there they will say it is a nutmeg flavored ice cream, but oddly enough has no nutmeg in it. I look forward to my next trip home.

I grew up in MI and used to get blue moon ice cream at the city dairies. Miss it now that I live in CA. But I solved the problem by making my own after receiving an ice cream maker as a gift. Just use the recipe for vanilla ice cream, use 1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons of pure almond extract instead of vanilla, and add some blue food coloring.

I called the Uncle Harry’s place in a previous post and they had mentioned u can call Uncle Harry’s in Waterford, WI where their ice cream is made. Doing so resulted in the find that u can purchase the ice cream in quarts, and pints, and if u so wish a TUB for aprox 30 some bux. Uncle Harry’s in Waterford, WI 262-534-4757.

I am the granddaughter of the Sherer’s in Dayton, Ohio. We make our blue moon with shredded pineapple and fruit juice. It’s not often that you find real homemade Blue Moon ice cream! If you’re ever in the Dayton-Cincinnati- Columbus area, I recommend the drive to try ours!

Oh my gosh! I am not crazy! I can’t believe I found all of you — I have been on a quest for Blue Moon ice cream for about 10 years. They used to sell it at a little dairy called Ridgelea Dairy across from our school in Bucktown. PA. Unfortunately, they sold the dairy farm and there is now a new housing development where I used to get Blue Moon ice cream! The last time I had it, I begged the server to please tell me the ingredients and she had absolutely no idea. She even asked the manager and they said they had no clue. Why is it such a mystery?! Isn’t it amazing that you just can not place the flavor? We are talking here about a smooth ice cream with a very unusual shade of blue (NOT raspberry or blueberry) and an unusual taste that is light like vanilla but is not vanilla?!

Blue Moon ice cream came up tonight when I was at dinner with friends here in Minnesota. As always, when describing it the friends thought I was crazy, but my Californian husband was forced to eat some last year when we were up at the Schoenherr Stroh’s store so he could second me. My first taste of Blue Moon was when I used to vacation in Beulah, MI out near the sleeping bear dunes at a road side general store. I think there it was made by Mooney’s, but it tasted just the same as the Stroh’s which you could get in the Detroit area (makes sense as they are now part of the same company). It can really be only described as “Blue.” in flavor, though I think you can also say that it tastes like someone trying to replicate berry flavor with crude chemical knowledge. It is definately /not/ a sherbert, and I would turn up my nose at anything pretending to be Blue Moon which had pineapple or cherries or any other adulterations to it’s smooth, creamy chemical goodness.
Anyone who’s had the Stroh’s Blue Moon /and/ the small-creamery blue moon you can apparently get shipped from icecreamsource.com, is the flavor comparable at all?

My family loves Blue Moon; I’m from the east coast and had never heard of it until I moved to Michigan. Guernsey’s dairy in Northville and House of Flavors in Ludington are two of our favorites.
House of Flavors told us the flavor was “nutmeg” when we asked. But, I’m a gourmet cook and have a pretty well-tuned palate, and I’ve always said it was orange & almond. On the other hand, if you grate fresh nutmeg, you definitely get an orange-almond scent from it.
If I were to try to make it, I would use something orange flavored (the blue curacao seems to make sense) and some almond extract and a touch of vanilla (just a touch) and a grating or two of fresh nutmeg.
One way to experiment with the flavors is to take a quart of half and half and add sugar to it until it’s as sweet as ice cream. Pour small amounts of the sweetened half and half into small glasses and experiment with adding a few drops of the various flavors until you get it right.
Obviously you’ll have to increase the amount in order to make enough to freeze in an icecream maker. I’d recommend making it using a custard base (with eggs) rather than a straight milk and cream mixture, as blue moon is usually a very rich and custard-y ice cream.

It’s been 25 years since I moved from Sterling Heights MI to California and have missed my Blue Moon like only you folks here can understand. And it was at a Stroh’s parlor – I wish we had them here. Yes – the flavor is too hard to describe but the pleasure is immense. And I am giddy with having found this site and other’s who are as fond of this food as I am. I was lucky enough to go to Chicago on business 12 years ago and for 7 days staight I got to enjoy the best thing about my childhood. Long live Blue Moon and hopefully someone can get the real flavor out here. Enjoy!

Is anyone old enough to remember WWII? I had blue moon ice cream when I was six or seven in Michigan. blue moon was made because of a shortage
of cream and sugar due to the war.I don’t know if any of the blue moons made today are the original recipe. I would like to know. The original was great. I miss it.

I live in Wisconsin, so getting blue moon ice cream has never been an issue for me. I am so sorry for those of you who get this wonderful ice cream on only rare occasion. I love this ice cream, I’ve just never been able to describe the flavor. Glad to know I’m not the only one who likes blue moon ice cream.

My family loves blue moon ice cream. We have had it when friends are over, but no one can decide on the flavor. Vanilla, mint, white chocolate, who knows. You can get it in Columbus, Ohio at Mardi GRAS ON HARD ROAD. They also have exotic flavors such as rose, greentea, sassafras, you name it.

Raised in Mich, been in Florida for 20+ years and am still looking for the flippin reciepe. I can’t take it anymore Florida sucks! No RedPop ice cream, No Superman ice cream, and for goodness sakes NO BLUEMOON!!
I even tried to get a House of Flavors franchise to build in Florida but HoF wouldn’t hear at all even with the intentions of building the icecream factory. If anyone gives me the right reciepe for Blue Moon I’ll make sure they have all they can eat for life FREE!!!
BTW. the oldest known seller of Blue Moon is in Baldwin, Mich. last time I saw the building it looked like it was going to fall over.

My son and I just returned from Shermans Dairy in South Haven Michigan and each had a big bowl of Blue Moon! We had some a few weeks ago and I have been thinking about it ever since. Brought back great childhood memories _House of Flavors in Jenison, Michigan. I am going to try making it using almond extract. I also know an employee at Shermans and will try and get their reicpe.

My buddy and I just got a three gallon tub of blue moon (strohs)ice cream from our Meijer store in Muncie, IN. We had been talking about how much we loved blue moon and when we started looking around, we couldn’t find any anywhere. I saw someone on this website say some Meijer stores carry blue moon. We called the store and it is normally only available to be purchased as a cone. But when he realized we were blue moon fanatics, he sold us the whole tub for $22. I just finished my first bowl, and man was it good. Looks like my blue moon fix will be taken care of for a couple of weeks!

I ordered the Blue Moon flavor from National as per the post of debi on August 14, 2004 10:32 PM.
It was $13.00 a container and just finished a pint of vanilla ice cream with the Blue Moon flavor.
It is just as she says – great.
Don’t order ice cream and pay mega bucks – order the concentrate and enjoy when ever you want!!!!!

South Haven, situated on the shores of Lake Michigan between Holland and Benton Harbor is renowned for its blueberries and tourists. It is a lesser-known fact that South Haven is also where they make one of the finest eating ice creams around – Sherman’s. Grandpa Sherman started the business back in 1916. He had a small herd of dairy cattle and delivered milk with a horse drawn wagon from house to house around South Haven.
The business flourished through the years as Grandpa Sherman passed the business on to his son Rupert, who in turn passed it on to his boys. One of the boys, Port, always had it in his mind to make something good tasting that would make people happy – ice cream. So in the 50’s he started fiddling and fussing with an old ice cream batch freezer, trying to make the best ice cream around.
Port wanted an old-fashioned ice cream – not one too light or too greasy. He loaded it up with natural flavorings – no need to cheapen the product by using artificial flavors. After he got it just the way he wanted it, Port started selling it, first house to house, then to ice cream stores and finally grocery stores.
Meanwhile, Port bought out his brothers and stopped bottling milk stating confidently, “We’ll just make good ice cream.”
What Makes Sherman’s So Special?

Blue Moon can be found in most Kilwin’s ice cream stores. In Florida, it can be found in St. Augustine and St. Armands Circle (Sarasota). It is also at Highlands, North Carolina. My wife and I are crazy about it, and seek it out wherever we go.

I just bought a gallon at the grocery store in Green Bay, WI. No need drive all the way to the UP. My wife, who grew up in Sturgeon Bay had it for the first time today! Her keen sense of taste told her it was almond with a hint of spiced orange. Ergo, almond/blue curaco may be the combo. When I was in college we made essences of fruits in the lab, and I believe this flavor may actually be a lab creation, not found in natural fruit sources.

For the reader in New York who is looking for Blue Moon ice cream. There is an old fashioned roadside icream place called “Moxie’s” just outside Troy NY (which is near Albany, NY).
They have great Blue Moon ice cream. And the other flavors are all home made, too.

I grew up eating Stroh’s Blue Moon in the Detroit area. When I was in graduate school in Atlanta, I used to have Blue Moon dreams…
The dreams were always the same. I would be on the first level of an empty shopping mall. There was a stairway in front of me that lead up to the second level of the mall, and underneath (or behind) the stairway was an ice cream parlor. Everything was awash in soft golden light…
This was a special ice cream parlor because it served Blue Moon Ice Cream — the only place in Atlanta that sold it!
But, in every dream, when I would step into the parlor, they were OUT of Blue Moon! Or, the line would be really long and I was unable to get to the front before I woke up.
Now, if that doesn’t add insult to injury, I don’t know what does! 🙂
Once I graduated, the dreams went away. I live in IL now and, practically speaking, am no closer to a Blue Moon outlet than I was in Atlanta. I can’t wait to experiment with the recipes at this site. The fun is in the journey!
